The Distinguished
Gentleman’s Ride
22 May 2022
Since 2012, The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride has connected a global community in over 1,000 cities, raising over AUD $34 million for men's health. Movember is humbled to be the official charity partner of the ride. As our partnership enters its seventh year, we remain steadfast in our mission to bring riders together to celebrate social connections and raise awareness for men's mental health and prostate cancer. The last two years have been disruptive, to say the least. Despite the challenges, folks around the globe have rallied to find innovative ways to stay connected and encourage one another to take action on their health. In 2022, we are opening the throttle and riding that momentum. This is the year for social connections, and for The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride 2022, it is the year to ride together.
How it all started
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in 2012 by Mark Hawwa in Sydney, Australia, after being inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike, wearing his finest suit.
It was decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting niche motorcycle communities together.
That first ride brought together over 2,500 riders across 64 cities, with the success of the event encouraging Mark to consider how it could be used to support a worthy cause. The rest, as they say, is eloquently attired history.
A match made in heaven
Movember has been the official charity partner of The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride since 2016. Both organisations share one simple common goal: to bring people together and raise awareness of men's health.
2022 marks our seventh year riding together. During that time, funds raised by The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride have led to game-changing research in prostate cancer and life-saving mental health and suicide prevention programs.
This includes programs supporting firefighters, paramedics, police officers and military veterans who are all disproportionally affected by poor mental health through the Veterans and First Responders Program.
As well as the The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride Social Connections Challenge, which is testing new ideas from DGR community that bring motorcycle riders together to improve their wellbeing and, ultimately, help them build stronger and more meaningful connections.
